What moves first?
Technical fixes and Google Business Profile changes. Remove a stray noindex tag, speed the site up or correct the profile category and Google can react within days, because it already knows the page and simply reads it differently. New pages take longer: a fortnight or so to be indexed, then weeks of Google testing where the page belongs before it settles.
So the first month tends to be about clearing obstacles, and the rankings you notice from month three onwards are the new pages finding their level.
Why do some Halifax searches move faster than others?
Because Google can only rank pages that exist, and for a surprising number of local searches nobody has built one. Where the businesses on page one are there by accident, with a general page that happens to mention the town, a page written properly for that exact search can pass them within weeks. Where three competitors have each built a dedicated page and collected reviews for years, you are in a longer contest.
Dolphin Heating in Huddersfield is first on Google for female gas engineer Huddersfield, and named in the AI answer, because the site was built around the thing people actually type. That is the pattern to look for in your own market: the searches with real customers behind them that your rivals have left alone.
What slows local SEO down?
Five things, in our experience. A site that cannot be crawled or is slow on a phone, so that every page added is added into a hole. A redesign part way through that changes the page addresses and drops the pages that had started to rank. No content, because there is nothing new for Google to index. No reviews coming in, so the profile looks dormant. And changing the target every month, so no page gets long enough to settle.
Most of those are decisions, which is the encouraging part. The one that is genuinely outside anyone’s hands is a competitor who is simply better resourced, and we will tell you when that is the case.
What does the first year look like?
Months one and two go on the foundations: technical fixes, the profile, the research into which searches matter and who holds them, and the first new pages. Months three to six are when the trend shows in Search Console, impressions first and clicks behind them, and the map pack usually moves in this window for a local trade. From six months on the work is about breadth, more pages for more searches, plus the reviews, photographs and mentions that hold a position once it is won.
RB Electrical in Halifax has averaged around two organic leads a week for five years, which is what the compounding looks like once the foundations are in.
What happens if we stop?
The rankings hold for a while and then drift. A page that has earned its place keeps it for months, sometimes longer, because Google does not remove what has been earned the day the invoices stop. Over time, competitors add pages and reviews, the profile goes quiet and the site falls behind on the technical side, and the position slips a little at a time.
The same is true of paid advertising, except there the enquiries stop the same afternoon. It is a fair reason to prefer search once the first year is behind you.
What tells you the local SEO is working?
From the enquiries, first, and from the searches that produced them. Search Console shows impressions and clicks for every real query, the Google Business Profile shows calls, direction requests and website visits from the map, and the enquiry form and phone tell you which of those became work. We agree the handful of numbers that matter before the work starts and report on those, so that at the end of a quarter there is something to hold the work to.
Rankings go in the report as context. On their own they prove very little, and a business can climb three places and gain nothing if the search had no customers behind it.
